Release: Dec 3, 2021, Prime
Harlem was created by Tracy Oliver, premiered on Prime on Dec 3rd, 2021, follow by the second season, which premiered on February 3, 2023, and the 3rd final season premiered on Jan 23, 2025. The comedy series is about 4 female friends who met while attending New York University, they all live in Harlem, are in their thirties, trying to balance career, life, family, friendships, basically, just trying to hold it all together.
We all love our talented cheerful girlfriend, Meagan Good, I mean who doesn’t have a Meagan in their life or, if you’re like me, then, you’re the Meagan in your circle of girlfriends.
I love this show and what it represents, if you never watched Girlfriends growing up in your early 20s, then, this is a revamp of that amazing show. Each character brings their own uniqueness, style, where you can relate to each one of them in various ways. Meagan character Camille Parks, Grace Byers as Quinn Joseph, Shoniqua Shandai as Angie Wilson, and Jerrie Johnson as Tye Reynolds are all amazing actresses.
This show is very relatable, its four good best friends from college, following their dreams, living their life unapologetically, being free from all the negative stereotypical notions that black women cannot be friends with one another since that’s all that is portrayed in various, if not all reality shows. So, when a show like Harlem comes around, that illustrates the actual girlfriend relationships outside of the misconceptions, its truly a breathtaking to watch.
Besides, there are still things that can be improved, a few unrealistic expectations or, the overly sexy depiction of Angi character can be altered a bit so that we can learn more about her beauty outside of sex. In season 2, we get more content, depth, and complexity in season 2, with Whoopi bringing more maturity to the show and, even with the season 2 ending.
Moreover, Season 3, so far, the first two episodes are intriguing and, I can only see the best is yet to be released.
