Release on 03/23/2023 Streaming on Netflix
The Night Agent is a television series, American action thriller, that is based on a 2019 novel by Matthew Quirk. The series is created by Shawn Ryan, first season premiered on Netflix on March 23, 2023, follow by the recent premier of the second season on January 23, 2025. Fortunately, we do know a third season is on the way, Netflix confirmed this in October 2024.
The story focusses on an FBI agent named Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso. Peter is employed as a Night Action telephone operator in the White House. But there’s more to his story. He was on the DC Metro when someone attempted to blow up the train and, if he wasn’t there, it would have been worse. He is now working at the White House as a Night Agent when he receives a phone call from a woman named Rose Larkin, played by Luciane Buchanan, and this is where the story begins to develop.
This series is nothing new, I mean from the viewpoints of a secret government programs, covering up numerous government conspiracies, government moles, traitors, and, how one is trying to solve the dark web conspiracy puzzle. This is a fast-paced action series that keeps you engage, which I like. Though, some scenes do feel rush, illogical with how a civilian character played by Rose, who has no military knowledge, background, a bit clueless at times, yet she’s still being told highly classify info. Furthermore, several inconsistencies, misrepresentation of the various entity responsibilities of the FIB, CIA, NSA & so on.
Plus, there are holes, unnecessary storylines, the writing felt rushed, editing, acting was also somewhat undesirable and it’s not because the actors are not great actors, it’s the fact that the roles did not fit their characters. One example is the VP daughter role & the plot could have been left out, that would have saved 5 episodes of the 1st season.
Going into season 2, this is where Peter is now in the field, working undercover, as things are started to unfold, his character start to shift, dynamic between him & Rose are varying however, I found season 2 to be boring, uninteresting, script is all over the place, not in a good way. Hopefully, they can turn things around in season 3.
