The Rip is a 2026 American action-thriller film written and directed by Joe Carnahan. It stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Teyana Taylor, and others. The film was released on Netflix on January 16, 2026, and is inspired by the true story of Miami-Dade County Sheriff Chris Casiano.
Set in the Miami-Dade Police Department’s narcotics unit, the film centers on a high-stakes raid at a stash house. Tensions escalate as the officers begin to suspect one another of trying to steal the cash, threatening the team’s trust and loyalty.
The Rip has the bones of an interesting story, but its direction and writing feel sloppy and unfocused. The pacing is uneven, staging and cinematography are awkward, and the action sequences fail to fully engage, frustrating, especially given the caliber of the cast, all of whom clearly have the talent to deliver something much stronger.
The characters’ behavior, particularly the cops, often defies logic, which makes it hard to stay invested. The script leans on clichés, and inconsistent character development prevents the story from feeling sharp or compelling.
That said, it’s still watchable. The plot is decent, and it can be entertaining if you’re willing to leave logic at the door. Overall, not a bad movie, but also not a memorable one, an average, fun-but-forgettable action thriller
