Citadel is an American spy action series created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh, and David Weil for Amazon Prime Video, with the Russo brothers serving as executive producers. The series stars Priyanka Chopra, Richard Madden, Stanley Tucci, and more. Season one premiered on April 28, 2023 (6 episodes), followed by season two on May 6, 2026 (7 episodes).
The Citadel universe has also expanded globally with multiple non-English spin-offs, including Citadel: Diana (Italy) and Citadel: Honey Bunny (India), both released in 2024.
The premise centers around a global spy agency, Citadel, that has fallen, leaving its agents with wiped memories. As a powerful syndicate known as Manticore rises, former agents must piece together their pasts to fight back.
While the concept of building a global Citadel universe is ambitious and promising, the execution falls short. The series relies heavily on flashbacks, often placed at awkward moments which disrupt the flow and become frustrating, especially when layered on top of a real-time narrative. The storytelling feels disjointed at times, with episodes coming across as out of sync.
Although the cast is strong, the series doesn’t deliver anything particularly groundbreaking. The plot leans on familiar spy tropes we’ve seen many times before, making it feel predictable even after watching both the main series and its spin-offs.
There are still enjoyable moments and glimpses of potential throughout, but after several hours of content, it’s clear the show doesn’t fully realize its ambitious vision.
