The Substance is a 2024 body-horror film written, co-produced, and directed by Coralie Fargeat. The movie features a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid, and others. It was released theatrically in the United States on September 20, 2024, and later became available to stream on HBO Max.
The film’s underlying theme centers on Hollywood star Elisabeth Sparkle, who is fired from her long-running aerobics television show by its producer on her 50th birthday. While recovering in the hospital, a young male nurse slips her a flash drive promoting ‘The Substance,’ an illicit drug that promises to create a ‘younger, more beautiful, more perfect’ version of oneself.
Elisabeth orders and injects the single-use serum, convulsing as a younger woman—Sue emerges from a slit in her back. The two must then exchange consciousness every seven days without exception, with the inactive body remaining unconscious and sustained intravenously. Over time, Elisabeth and Sue develop into entirely separate personalities and grow to despise one another, plunging both of their lives into chaos.
The Substance starts off strong, presenting a solid storyline with a clear narrative direction. However, as the film progresses, it begins to lose focus, and about halfway through it becomes disjointed and chaotic. Abrupt shifts in the plot, particularly the reveal of the two leads as separate, conflicting individuals, cause the story to unravel, and by the time the ending approaches, the film has veered completely off course. Ultimately, it spirals into an overblown, disastrous finale that is more grotesque spectacle than genuine insight
Moreover, the film’s visuals, sound design, and acting are all strong and effective, and the initial premise is compelling, a bold exploration of womanhood, aging, self-perception, and the destructive obsession with physical perfection. Unfortunately, the ending causes the entire piece to fall apart. What could have been a profound and thought-provoking conclusion instead devolves into a a chaotic sequence of events that never brings the themes to a meaningful resolution and ultimately weakens the entire narrative.
