Scarpetta is an American television series developed by Liz Sarnoff. It is based on the book series of the same name by Patricia Cornwell and is produced by Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, who also star in the series. The show premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 11, 2026, and consists of eight episodes.

The series unfolds across two timelines, with flashbacks depicting events from the first novel, Postmortem, and a present-day storyline inspired by the 25th book, Autopsy.

The story follows Dr. Kay Scarpetta, portrayed by Nicole Kidman, a forensic pathologist who returns to Virginia for a second chance as Chief Medical Examiner—a position she previously held in the 1990s before being forced to leave. Using advanced forensic technology, she works to unravel complex mysteries and solve crimes, all while navigating life in a crowded household shared with her sister and brother-in-law, her husband, and her niece.

The series leans more toward a soap opera–style family melodrama than the sharp, intellectually engaging crime drama I was expecting. I had anticipated a story grounded in the meticulous world of forensic pathology, but instead, it unfolds as a frustrating mix of filler, subplots, and endless back-and-forth dialogue. The frequent flashbacks and narrative detours feel more like padding than purposeful storytelling.

Rather than building analytical tension through the examination of evidence and reconstruction of crimes, the show drifts into vague emotional beats and repetitive exposition. As a result, the narrative feels uneven and, at times, chaotically structured. Even the central murders lack intrigue, making it difficult to stay fully invested.

he characters are largely unlikable, and the dialogue—especially between the sisters—is weighed down by constant, repetitive bickering. There’s little sense of chemistry or authenticity among the cast, particularly in their relationships with their spouses, which makes the interactions feel forced and unconvincing.

That said, the series isn’t without its strengths. The cast, for the most part, remains committed to their roles, even if the material doesn’t always serve them well. While this may not be the strongest showcase for many of the actors—including the two leads—their effort and presence still stand out at times.

Overall, despite my harsh criticism, the series isn’t the worst I’ve seen or currently airing. It does have its share of compelling moments, but it’s likely to appeal more to fans of soap opera–style dramas than to crime series enthusiasts like myself.
