Mortal Kombat II (2026) is an American martial arts film based on the iconic video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. It serves as the sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021) and the fourth installment in the franchise. The film features returning cast members such as Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, and Jessica McNamee, with a stronger focus on Johnny Cage and Bi-Han/Sub-Zero. It was released in the U.S. on May 8, 2026, by Warner Bros. Pictures, with a third installment already in development.
The story follows Emperor Shao Kahn, who conquers Edenia after killing King Jerrod, taking control alongside Queen Sindel and Princess Kitana. Years later, as the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament approaches, Lord Raiden and Sonya Blade recruit a washed-up ‘90s martial arts actor, Johnny Cage, to serve as Earthrealm’s fifth champion.
Having seen previous Mortal Kombat films (1995, 2021, and now 2026), expectations were modest, mainly hoping for upgraded fight scenes. While the film delivers on being fast-paced and visually engaging, filled with iconic moves, phrases, and fatalities from the games, the fight choreography doesn’t quite match the impact of the 2021 version and struggles to capture the true essence of the source material.
Where the film really falls short is in its storytelling and performances. The plot is straightforward, Earthrealm must win the tournament to avoid destruction, yet the execution feels surprisingly disjointed. The acting is underwhelming across the board, including Karl Urban’s portrayal of Johnny Cage.
On a positive note, the tournament structure does echo the feel of the games, and standout moments especially the fight between Liu Kang and Kung Lao add some excitement.
Overall, Mortal Kombat II is best enjoyed as a turn-your-brain-off action film. It has its moments but ultimately doesn’t live up to its full potential.
