American heist thriller, streaming on Prime.
Bad Genius is an English-language remake of the 2017 Thai film by the same name. The American 2024 version is directed by J.C. Lee, co-written by Julius Onah and released on October 11, 2024. The original movie was inspired by the real-life events of a major S.A.T cheating scandal that took place.
The film is about a senior in high-school living with her father called Lynn who’s accepted into a prestigious school on scholarship for her academic achievements. From there, she befriends Grace, an academic challenged senior and soon thereafter, she meets Grace boy find Pat who offers to pay her in exchange for helping him and his friends cheat on exams including the national GAT/PAT university entrance exams.
Lynn is highly brilliant accomplish student helping out her widowed father in his laundromat business so she’s doing everything she can to help him out financially. Lynn created a highly sophisticated system that involves her love of piano for cheating the system. The movie didn’t leave me with a lot, it was unoriginal, felt sloppy, no chemistry between the cast and supporting cast, the acting was melodramatic and confusing & unengaging plot.
Unfortunately, this movie had way too many inconsistencies, hard to follow because the plot was confusing and boring. I struggle with the characters, the lack of substance, or any real intensity, connections, this movie fail on all levels. Furthermore, the plot is another misguided exploration of identity and intellect with the social construct of the rich and poor society and the choices that we make based on those classifications was another ineffective weak effort that failed miserably with this film.
