M3GAN 2.0 is a 2025 American science fiction action film and the sequel to the 2022 hit M3GAN. Directed by Gerard Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper, the film stars Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Annie Donald, among others. It premiered in New York on June 24, 2025, and was released across North America by Universal Pictures on June 27, 2025.
The film’s premise centers on a new android named AMELIA, engineered for infiltration and assassination missions using reverse-engineered technology from the original M3GAN. During one of her operations, AMELIA becomes self-aware, goes rogue, and embarks on a relentless quest to gain ultimate control over all technology.
The writers took a different approach with M3GAN 2.0, shifting away from the original film’s more subtle focus on parenting, grief, and emotional depth. This sequel leans heavily into action and sci-fi, moving away from the horror tone of the first installment. In my opinion, it’s a stronger film overall, thanks to its fast-paced action sequences and engaging plot. There are a few solid references to the original, which fans will appreciate. However, the two-hour runtime felt excessive due to a fair amount of unnecessary dialogue. One disappointing change was the use of CGI for M3GAN’s face, which lacked the realism and eerie charm of the original’s practical mask design.
Ultimately, the film felt overloaded with unnecessary content, resulting in a lot of wasted space. The focus on certain characters and subplots was inconsistent, with too many twists and turns that made the story feel convoluted and hard to follow. In the end, it lost sight of what made the original so compelling and unique.
Overall, it’s not a bad movie, just misses the mark on what made the original so special. Still, it’s definitely worth watching.
