Unchosen is a 2026 British psychological thriller series that premiered on Netflix on April 21, 2026. The six-episode series is set within a secluded Christian cult in England and follows Rosie, a devoted member living with her husband and daughter. When their hearing-impaired daughter accidentally falls into the water, she is rescued by a mysterious stranger named Sam. His sudden appearance begins to unravel the family’s reality and sets off a chain of unsettling events.
This series has an intriguing premise and a strong cast, but the script and character dynamics often feel off. It presents a familiar depiction of a strict religious cult, defined by rigid, patriarchal rules where men hold authority and women are expected to manage the household without question along with loveless marriages and buried secrets. The story gains momentum when an outsider infiltrates the tight-knit community, sparking chaos and setting up a compelling narrative.
However, the execution falls short. Too many inconsistencies and plot holes make the story feel unrealistic and, at times, undermine its overall impact and credibility.
For starters, the escaped convict, who has committed multiple murders is on the run in the same town, yet law enforcement never bothers to investigate whether he might be hiding within the community. That oversight alone strains credibility. From there, the inconsistencies continue: Rosie somehow knows how to drive a truck, manages to leave the compound, travels into town, and returns unnoticed, all of which feels bizarre and far-fetched given the strict nature of the group.
That said, Unchosen isn’t a terrible thriller, it simply falls short in its portrayal of a highly separatist Christian sect, which ultimately makes the storyline difficult to believe.
Overall, the series is an easy binge with a few standout performances, but it never quite rises above its flaws. Enjoy it for what it is, but don’t expect much more.
