Beef is an American comedy-drama anthology series created by Lee Sung Jin for Netflix. Season 1 premiered on April 6, 2023, followed by Season 2 on April 16, 2026. The series stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, among others. Season 1 consists of 10 episodes, while Season 2 features 8.
The first season centers on two strangers whose road rage incident spirals into an intense and prolonged feud. In Season 2, the story shifts to two couples at an elite Montecito country club, where one pair witnesses a violent altercation between their employers, setting off a chain of coercion, blackmail, and escalating tension.
Beef explores the emotional weight of identity, expectations, and internalized pressure, particularly within the Asian American experience. It examines the burden of maintaining success, along with the shame and guilt that can accompany perceived failures, emotions that can quietly build and, at times, erupt into something far more destructive. While these themes won’t reflect every experience, the portrayal feels raw, honest, and refreshingly authentic.
The series blends dark comedy with gripping drama, anchored by standout performances from its leads and a strong supporting cast. The storytelling is layered and intentional, offering depth through parallel lives shaped by different circumstances and the consequences of their choices. It also tackles complex themes, money, status, and mental health in a way that feels both culturally specific and universally relatable.
Well-paced and character-driven, Beef gradually reveals why each character behaves the way they do, making their journeys feel grounded and human.
However, the show isn’t without its flaws. Some supporting characters come and go with underdeveloped or uneven story arcs, making their impact feel inconsistent. Certain plot points and character decisions lack proper buildup, and the frequent use of flashbacks can feel excessive at times. The final few episodes, in particular, come across as rushed, with moments that feel weaker or less thoughtful writing.
Nevertheless, it remains a strong and worthwhile series, especially for viewers interested in Asian American–centered stories.
