Why Did I Get Married Again?
Full Review
Why Did I Get Married Again? is the third installment in the Why Did I Get Married franchise, which began back in 2007. The comedy-drama is written, produced, directed, and starred in by Tyler Perry. The original films featured Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Richard T. Jones, Denise Boutte, Keesha Sharp, and Malik Yoba.
The sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, was released in 2010, followed by a television spinoff that premiered in 2011. Why Did I Get Married Again premiered on Netflix on September 9, 2026.
Now we’re back for the third and final installment (perhaps), with most of the original cast returning. Unfortunately, Janet Jackson is not in this one due to a scheduling conflict with her tour. But we do get a new addition to the crew, our girl Taraji P. Henson.
What I liked about this installment is that it focuses more on the group getting older and watching their children grow into adulthood. The story shifts toward the next generation and how these now-grown kids are navigating young adulthood, relationships, marriage, and figuring out who they want to be. There’s also more of a focus on legacy, which gives the movie a slightly different angle from the previous films.
Now, let’s be honest, this is nothing groundbreaking. It’s basically the same Why Did I Get Married formula we’ve seen before, just with a new location, Italy and the focus shifted toward the offspring.
Could I point out all the inconsistencies, plot holes, and unrealistic storylines? Absolutely. But why? If you’re familiar with Tyler Perry and his work, you already know what you’re getting. This isn’t meant to be some deep, thought-provoking, life-changing cinematic experience. It’s a Tyler Perry movie doing exactly what a Tyler Perry movie does.
And honestly, the movie doesn’t shy away from that.
There are plenty of absurd moments, dramatic situations, and storylines that will have you saying, “Now, how does THAT make sense?” But that’s part of the experience.
Couple of Critics Verdict: Why Did I Get Married Again? isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it brings back familiar characters, adds a new generation, and gives fans another opportunity to spend time with this crew. Don’t overthink it. Don’t look for perfection. Just enjoy it for what it is and embrace all the absurdity along the way.
