Crystal Lake
Full Review
Crystal Lake is an American slasher television series developed by Brad Caleb Kane and serves as a prequel to the iconic Friday the 13th franchise. Set eight years before the original film, the series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, alongside William Catlett, Cameron Scoggins, and others. The series premiered on Peacock on October 15, 2026.
The story takes us back to 1971, one year after the tragic drowning of young Jason Voorhees. Still grieving the loss of her son, Pamela believes Jason is somehow still alive. But as strange and unsettling deaths begin happening around the Crystal Lake community, some of the town’s darkest secrets start coming to light.
I’ll say this: Crystal Lake does a great job reinventing the origins of one of horror’s most recognizable franchises. Rather than simply relying on the usual slasher formula, the series takes its time building the story, developing its characters, and giving us a much deeper look into Pamela Voorhees.
And Linda Cardellini? She absolutely delivers! Her performance takes us through the emotional layers of a grieving mother, from the heartbreak and empathy you initially feel for Pamela to the uncomfortable realization of just how far her obsession and instability have taken her. She brings a complexity to the character that makes you look at Pamela differently.
One of my favorite things about this series is the decision to explore Pamela’s backstory. We get more insight into who she was, what shaped her, and how she became the woman we know from the franchise. It gives you a better understanding of her actions, but let’s be clear: understanding her doesn’t mean excusing her. It simply gives us another perspective.
The cinematography also deserves some recognition. The dark, oppressive atmosphere, 1970s rural New Jersey setting, and practical gore effects give the series that nostalgic Friday the 13th feel while still making it its own. The retro vibe is definitely there.
Overall, this is more than just another slasher series. There’s actual character development, emotional depth, suspense, and a storyline that gives longtime fans something new to appreciate.
Couple of Critics Verdict: Crystal Lake is a well-made and compelling addition to the Friday the 13th franchise. The deeper exploration of Pamela Voorhees makes the story more interesting, and Linda Cardellini’s performance is a standout. It manages to honor the original franchise while giving us a fresh perspective on its origins.
Definitely worth watching, especially for Friday the 13th fans. Now Peacock, let’s see what you have planned for Season 2.
