Project Hail Mary is a 2026 American science fiction film directed and produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard. It is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir. The film stars Ryan Gosling, who also serves as a producer alongside Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and others. It was released in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios on March 20, 2026.
Set in 2032, the film follows Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher and former molecular biologist, played by Ryan Gosling, who awakens from an induced coma aboard an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there.
Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi adventure that blends humor, high-stakes survival, and heart, with emotional storytelling as one of its greatest strengths. The film strikes an effective balance between emotion and entertainment. Ryan Gosling delivers an impressive performance, bringing charm and carrying much of the film on his own. The cinematography and visuals are equally compelling, with impressive effects and practical elements that elevate the overall sci-fi experience.
That said, at over 2.5 hours, the film does feel its length. While the middle act is engaging as the story develops, the ending feels rushed in comparison. There are also tonal inconsistencies, with frequent shifts between serious, high-stakes drama and moments of humor that don’t always land. At times, these abrupt changes make the plot feel more confusing than necessary.
Overall, it’s a great film, though it may have been better suited as a miniseries for Amazon.
