Resident Evil is a 2026 American horror film directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten. Based on the popular video game franchise by Capcom, this is the eighth live-action Resident Evil film and a reboot. The movie was released on September 18, 2026.

The story follows Bryan, a medical courier who agrees to make a last-minute delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. On his way there, he hits a woman who suddenly steps into the road, and from that moment on, his night goes completely sideways.

I actually liked Bryan as the main character. His awkwardness, humor, and overall personality gave the movie a lot of charm, and surprisingly, most of the comedy worked really well.

My only issue with that is…this is supposed to be Resident Evil, so all that comedy did take away a little from the horror. When the scary moments came, it was hard to take some of them as seriously because the movie had already established such a comedic tone.

That said, the movie definitely delivered when it came to the visuals. The costumes, suspense, atmosphere, cinematography, lighting, and sets all worked together really well to create the Raccoon City atmosphere we’ve come to expect from Resident Evil. Visually, the movie looked great.

My biggest disappointment was the last act. I really wish they had spent more time there because everything felt rushed. The character development also started to fall off during the third act, and some of the characters became less relatable as the story wrapped up.

Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Couple of Critics Verdict: Resident Evil is a solid reboot with a good mix of horror, action, and comedy. The humor worked for me, even if it did take some of the fear factor away. The visuals and atmosphere were on point, and Bryan was an entertaining lead. The rushed final act was my biggest complaint, but overall, this was a great reboot.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where they take the next Resident Evil.
